2019 Tsinghua University Summer Service and Learning Program in Rural China Recruit Notice

The Summer Service and Learning Program in Rural China (SSLP) launched in 2006. Thousands of students and faculty members from both Tsinghua and international Universities were engaged in the program over the past 10 years. The Program brought knowledge, encourage and warmth to the needy children, meanwhile, the participators gained a much deeper understanding of rural China and developed cross-cultural communication skills. Volunteering with SSLP is a rewarding and potentially life-changing experience.

This summer Tsinghua University plan to recruit about 90 Tsinghua volunteers and 45 international volunteers who show a sincere commitment to voluntary work. Volunteers are to be dispatched in 15 teams and perform their teaching service in 15 counties throughout various locations in rural China. Each team will consist of two Tsinghua teacher, six Tsinghua students and three international volunteers. Volunteers can provide diversified teaching services to the local students in those rural counties, including English teaching, culture lectures and intercultural communication exercises, etc.

1. Location: Beijing and some Rural Areas in China

2. Duration: 2 weeks

3. Dates: 2019 July 4th to July 19th

4. Participation Requirements:

       Gender Requirement: None

       Language & Proficiency Requirement: English. There is no Chinese language requirement.

       Required Experience: None but ideal candidates will have experience or interest in rural issues or development issues, as well as experience living in rural conditions (or camping) and/or experience in diverse cross-cultural teams or settings.

Major Requirement: None but preferred candidates are those with stated or intended academic interests in voluntary work or social work and/or Asian studies and/or languages.

Student Minimum Age: 18years old

5. Program Description:

Tsinghua University’s Summer Service and Learning Program in Rural China groups AmericanBritish and other international students with Tsinghua students to teach English and/or provide culture lectures and intercultural communication exercises to local school students and teachers. Volunteers can prepare teaching plans and materials in relation to such things as English movies, stories, pictures and so forth. Or prepare some lectures to introduce your country, hometown, university and your experience to expand the locals’ horizon of the world. Team members and location assignments will be communicated to participants in May and students will be encouraged to learn as much as possible about their rural location county and province.

6.Registration Fee:

Participants are responsible for payment of the following items: a non-refundable registration fee $590 in US dollar, round-trip air travel to and from Beijing, appropriate health insurance for the duration of the program.

The Registration Fee should be paid before April 28th , 2019.

7.Housing & Lodging Information:

Tsinghua University will provide the basic transportationtrain between Beijing and rural areas, housing and accommodation during the program in China. While completing the service learning projects in rural China, participants stay in local accommodations arranged by local schools. These would typically be student dormitories in rural schools. Accommodations are basic and spartan. Bedding, mosquito netting, and other basic necessities will be provided. WiFi is non-existent and internet availability unlikely.

8. About the visa

Applicants need to submit the copy of the passport information page, Tsinghua University will issue the invitation letter for foreign applicants, applicants can use this letter to apply the visa at the nearest Chinese Embassy.

9. About the certificate

Volunteers who complete the program and submit the reflection are eligible to receive a certificate for the contribution to the program, issued by Tsinghua University.

10. Application:

Applicants need to:

a. login to the website ( http://goglobal.tsinghua.edu.cn/en/program/sslp2019) for registration;

b. upload the scanned copy of participant’s passport personal information page(on ‘Supporting Documents –Add more files)

c. email the scanned copies of the signed Liability waiver agreements after received the invitation letter

*The scanned copy of passport personal information page will be used to issue the invitation letter and buy the train tickets to rural sites, etc.

Closing date for applications: April 8th ,2019.

11. Program Schedule:

April 8th 2019, Closing date for applications:

April 11th , Tsinghua University will issue the participants list and the invitation letters.

April 12th to April 28th , After getting visa, volunteers need to pay the registration fee, and email the payment record to bluelily@mail.tsinghua.edu.cn.

July 3th , participants arrive in Beijing

July 4th to July 5th  opening ceremony and ice-breaking

July 8th to July 19th , service in rural China

July 19th , program ends

July 20th , back to Beijing
